In this definitive biography, Abbe Trochu compiled a great number of extraordinary facts about the saint, based on his life and vocation. This is one of the two best biographies of St. Bernadette Soubirous. Trochu was a real scholar who also wrote a definitive biography of the Cure of Ars. It is very well-researched. For those unfamiliar with traditional Catholic hagiography, it may come across as devotional in tone at times. Trochu has veneration for the Saint and it is reflected in the way the book is written. It is, however, a real biography that is historically accurate, drawing on the best sources available to the author. If you are really interested in Saint Bernadette and the history of Lourdes, this is a must read. The other must read is Rene Laurentin's biography, which is somewhat longer and has more sources. Laurentin strongly emphasizes Bernadette's own words. Those interested in Bernadette and Lourdes should read both for sure.

Forgive me, Bernadette, but you captivated my heart a very long time ago, and I said even then, if I were ever to believe, you would be the one to make me believe. And so, here I am, finally, becoming a member of the Catholic church. It's your own fault, you didn't HAVE to be so lovely :)One of the quotes I read recently, in our church Missal, was Bernadette complaining about being shown off like the prize cow at the fair, with all the people trying to get a glimpse of "the visionary," and how she did her best to avoid the attention. And people doing silly things like dropping hats in front of her in the hope she would pick it up, hoping to get a 3rd class relic, to which she retorted for the person to pick it up himself. Another quote from the same article she says her Mother Superior told her her pride would die 15 minutes after she did. And then, from this book, one of the first quotes I glanced up, Bernadette says she is being sold on the street corner for .10cents (referring to holy cards that were being sold at the time) - and that was all she was worth. The more I learn, the more I'm drawn to this blessed saint. I can see no way for this book to disappoint me, except perhaps in leaving me wanting more :)Forgive me, Bernadette. I will do my best to think of you as a mother (you look alot like my mother.) Thank you for bringing me to God. May I one day be blessed to see Mary, the Immaculate Conception, upon the day of my consummation.Be generous to us poor hungry souls :)The book is lovely, and has many black & white photos I had not seen before. I could only wish for a hard-cover version, as paperbacks are too disposable, and Bernadette deserves so much better.

The book was extremely interesting to read about this poor young woman that suffered so much in her life. Her gentle soul as a child could not satisfy the fierce pressure she received in telling her story about seeing the virgin Mary. She paid dearly for the visions with personal physical ills, self-doubt, terrible poverty, malnutrition, and constant ridicule. It is amazing that she maintained her faith that led to a complete example of living as God wants all of us to live.

Well written and thorough. This is the story of Bernadette and her life before the apparitions, her accounts and visions, and life afterwards. This also gives varied testimony from many people who either knew her, saw her, spoke with her or interrogated her. She remained the same: pure at heart--no matter who grilled her or fussed over her. This was not one-sided. There were many non-believers and people aching to tear her down or expose her as a fraud. This was a well written book about the unexplainable--the ecstasies--the visions--the power of beings that are greater and higher than humans. It does not ramble on about the laws of religion but rather, the hope and goodness of God and the love of the blessed Virgin Mary. Bernadette warned that Lourdes is 'not a place of magic'--it is not a 'cure all'--but it is a place to bring your faith, hope and prayers. The photos are black-and-white, good and plenty, with a variety of years and people. I was very happy with this book--I visited Lourdes, the churches, the sacred spring and blessed grotto immediately after finishing the book. The book aided in what Lourdes once was, long before modern day took over and souvenir shops lined up. I would recommend it--even to non-believers out there--it's an interesting read and Bernadette's life story is remarkable.

This biography seemed like it was a translation. It still reads well and was my first book on the saint. The author is masterful at creating pictures in scenes ad using historical sources. The final chapters were very gripping, which narrated St. Bernadette's death. Excellent book. I read the kindle version, which is why I didn't give it the full five stars. Some words didn't transfer spelled properly and the photos were difficult to view. I feel like I missed out on the photos due to the kindle's limitations with visuals.

All Catholics, I suppose, have heard of Lourdes and may know something about it. But generally they probably know very little. If they know English only and have not read this book, then they may not know as much as it would benefit them to know. Translated from French, this is the best book available in English on the subject, as far as I know. The subject is not one that can go out of date.Postscript 2010: I did not find this book sentimental. The author writes from a standpoint of faith, but of an open-eyed, honest kind. There would be no other way to treat the subject unless one were trying to "debunk" it.2011: There is no question in my mind that Lourdes is a highly commercialized pilgrimage site. The commercialization began even in Bernadette Soubirous's lifetime, even while she was still living in Lourdes, before she was accepted into a convent. She totally rejected the commercialization. This is why one needs to know about the Lourdes of 1858 and to keep that Lourdes in mind even as one realizes that the true subject is eternal.
